How to read this episode. The language of “energy cost” is philosophical and psychological, not a clinical measurement of why a person feels tired. Interface theory and the free-energy principle are influential but debated research frameworks; neither proves that perception hides objective reality, that a fixed identity literally drains a quantifiable store of mental energy, or that contemplative awareness is a neurologically optimal state. The canvas, mirror, cliff and computer remain models for inquiry—not established equivalences between Buddhism, physics and neuroscience.

Interface theory of perception

Donald Hoffman and colleagues propose that natural selection may favour perceptual representations tuned to fitness rather than veridical depictions of an observer-independent world. The computer desktop is their guiding analogy: useful icons need not resemble the machinery they help us control. The evolutionary games support conclusions within their assumptions; they do not establish that all perception is wholly false or reveal what reality is in itself.

Emptiness and dependent arising

In Madhyamaka Buddhism, emptiness (śūnyatā) means that phenomena lack an intrinsic, independent nature. They arise through causes, conditions, relations and conceptual designation. Emptiness is therefore not simple non-existence. The episode’s flower example illustrates dependence, although making an observer necessary to the flower’s physical occurrence would go beyond the basic Buddhist claim.

The two truths

Madhyamaka distinguishes conventional truth—the workable world of persons, language and causation—from ultimate analysis, in which no phenomenon can be found to possess independent essence. These are not two separate universes. The distinction helps explain how something can be empty yet consequential, and why insight into emptiness need not cancel ethics, affection or ordinary responsibility.

“The map is not the territory”

Alfred Korzybski used this formulation in general semantics to stress that descriptions, categories and models omit features of what they represent. A map is useful precisely because it selects. Trouble begins when an abstraction is treated as exhaustive reality. The episode extends this into self-description: a story about “me” is a navigational model, not the totality of a living person.

The “is” of identity

General semantics warns that statements such as “John is an enemy” can make a temporary evaluation sound like a permanent identity. Grammatically, the verb to be is not itself pathological, and careful reasoning does not require eliminating it. The practical point is to notice when a label hides time, context, uncertainty and change.

Canvas and Chitradīpa

Chitradīpa, “The Lamp of the Picture”, is a chapter of the Advaita Vedānta text Pañcadaśī. It uses stages in preparing and painting a cloth as an analogy for consciousness, appearance and manifestation. The episode turns this metaphysical image into a psychological contrast, asking what happens when a person treats awareness as a surface that must continually retain a painted identity.

Rigpa and the mirror

In Dzogchen, rigpa refers to knowing or awareness of the mind’s nature within a specific Vajrayāna teaching and practice context. Mirror imagery conveys clarity and non-grasping: appearances can arise vividly without staining awareness. The episode uses this as a practical metaphor. It should not be reduced to passive observation, a universal theory of consciousness or a neuroscientific state already measured by current research.

Predictive processing and the free-energy principle

Predictive-processing approaches describe perception partly through hierarchical expectations and the updating of prediction errors. Karl Friston’s free-energy principle offers a broader mathematical framework connecting perception, learning and action through variational free energy. Variational free energy bounds surprise in a formal model; it is not identical with thermodynamic entropy, subjective surprise, ATP expenditure or the everyday feeling of exhaustion.

Active inference

Within the free-energy framework, active inference describes action as helping bring sensory states into line with predictions or preferred outcomes, alongside perceptual updating of the model. Turning on a heater when a room is colder than expected is an intuitive illustration. Human behaviour is more complex than this example, and denial or cognitive dissonance should not simply be treated as active inference without further argument.

Default mode network

The default mode network is a group of interacting brain regions often associated with internally directed cognition, autobiographical memory and aspects of self-referential thought. It is not an anatomical ego and is not merely “off” during healthy presence. Claims that defending identity makes it hyperactive and measurably drains glucose require specific evidence beyond the broad network associations used in the episode.

Stopping mind and mushin

The Zen teacher Takuan Sōhō described the danger of mind becoming detained on an opponent’s weapon, one’s own technique or fear. Later martial-arts language often calls unfixated responsiveness mushin, “no-mind”. This does not mean unconsciousness or forcibly suppressing thought. The image points towards flexible attention that does not remain captured by one object or commentary.

Affordances and biological motion

James J. Gibson used affordance for possibilities for action offered by an environment in relation to an organism. Gunnar Johansson’s point-light experiments showed that organised motion can convey recognisable biological activity with very sparse form information. These findings illuminate sensitivity to movement patterns; they do not show that a concept-free observer can directly detect another person’s hidden intention or become immune to camouflage.

Notice one mild self-description that appears today: perhaps “I am disorganised”, “I am impatient” or “I am bad at this”. Without trying to suppress it, name what is immediately observable instead: “I misplaced one thing”, “impatience is present”, or “this part is difficult just now”. Feel the difference between a permanent identity and a time-bound description. Then return to the next ordinary action. The exercise does not prove that there is no self; it simply tests whether a more precise map requires less defence.
